The famous Pterodactyl was discovered in 1784 in Bolivia by Cosimo Alessandro Colloni, an Italian scientist. Pterodactyl was the first pterosaur ever to be discovered. The Pterodactyl lived in the Early Jurassic Period about 150 million to 145 million years ago. The Pterodactyl is actually also known as Pterodactylus. But is commonly referred to as Pterodactyl. The Pterodactyl {like another similar pterosaur that we'll get to} has a referred to as a "harpoon" shaped crest. Did you know Pterodactyl {and all other Pterosaurs] are NOT DINOSAURS? It's true! pterosaurs are not dinosaurs because dinosaurs don't fly, so they could not put it in the dinosaur group once it was named, so they called it a new group, Pterosaurs, or flying reptiles.
